What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

At its core, assistive technology (often abbreviated AT) is any tool, piece of equipment, software, or system that supports an individual in reaching, maintaining, or improving function in everyday life. According to the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA), AT spans a wide range of items, from very simple to highly sophisticated. (www.atia.org)

Here are some examples:

- A low-tech communication board (for instance, cardboard with symbols) that helps someone who finds speaking difficult.

- A high-tech eye-gaze or head-tracking computer interface that allows someone with very limited movement to access a computer.

- Specialised software for reading or typing, mounted switches, and adapted keyboards, all fall under the umbrella of AT.

In short: if a tool helps a person with a disability or functional limitation to participate more fully in learning, working, or daily living, that’s assistive technology.

Why Does Assistive Technology Matter?

The true value of AT lies in enabling independence, inclusion, and access. It’s about removing barriers and promoting meaningful participation in daily life.

- Bridging functional gaps: When someone has difficulty speaking, writing, seeing, hearing, moving, or engaging in tasks, AT can help reduce or remove those barriers.

- Supporting participation: Whether at school, work, or home, AT empowers people to take part more fully in the activities that matter most to them.

- Tailoring to individual needs: The best AT is never one-size-fits-all. It’s chosen or adapted to a person’s strengths, preferences, environment, and goals.

- Promoting dignity and quality of life: Beyond practical support, AT fosters identity, social connection, and independence.

At CKG OT Ltd, our aim is to harness assistive technology within an occupational therapy framework, helping children, young people, and adults reach their full potential in meaningful, everyday activities.

How Do You Choose the Right Assistive Technology?

Choosing AT isn’t simply about finding the newest gadget, it’s about matching the right tool with the right person. ATIA emphasises that good AT decisions are team-based and person-centred, involving collaboration between therapists, teachers, engineers, families, and, most importantly, the individual themselves. (www.atia.org)

Here’s how the process often works:

1. Assessment of needs: Understanding functional challenges and setting clear goals.

2. Identifying possible solutions: Exploring both low- and high-tech options that fit the person’s environment.

3. Trial and training: Testing, adapting, and training users and their support network.

4. Review and follow-up: Monitoring effectiveness and making changes as needs evolve.

5. Funding and sustainability: Considering available funding sources and ongoing support.

Because CKG OT’s assistive technology service is occupational therapy–led, every recommendation is grounded in expert, holistic assessment and tailored to individual goals. We ensure that AT recommendations align with the person’s overall routines, environments, and long-term outcomes.
